Today, Longmont City Council members assemble with developers and builders to discuss pending city issues with Affordable housing opportunities.

 Builders, developers and real estate professionals have been invited by the city to participate in twice-monthly informal work sessions in order to come up with creative solutions to address the affordable housing shortage.

City Council would like encourage creative discussions for possible incentive programs, code changes, or resurrecting the 'inclusionary housing' program previously in place between 2001-'11.

The sessions are open to the public, though public comment time is not allotted on the agenda.

Rocky Mountain National Park Series: The Hexapods of RMNP

Have you seen the little blackish bugs on the snow surface while exploring Rocky Mountain National Park in the winter? I always wonder what they are and why they're out in the cold!?

They're known as snow fleas, but officially they're springtails, which are not fleas at all. Springtails are hexapods and, in the summer, hundreds of thousands can populate one cubic meter of top soil. We just don't notice springtails on dark soil, but definitely notice them bouncing around against the white snow surface, particularly on warmer winter days.

Snow fleas feed on decaying organic matter in the soil and play an important role in natural decomposition. Rocky Mountain National Park's Facebook page piqued my interest today with this video snip of springtails on the snow last week. Springtails can survive the cold temps because of a "glycine-rich antifreeze protein" I'd like some AFP for my hands and feet!

This past Wednesday marked the start of the Christian tradition of Lent, on which people all over the globe give up foods or habits to demonstrate self-restraint. Many non-Christians also take part, making sacrifices and changing unproductive habits, making positive lifestyle adjustments...

Covered in a recent New York Times article, The Church of England challenged those observing Lent to avoid plastic consumer products for the 40-day period. We all know plastic is omnipresent in our daily lives and is a major environmental problem.

Could you give up plastic for a week, a month, the entire year? It's all about habits, right? It used to be difficult to remember to bring our reusable bags to the grocery store, but now, for many, it's just habit.

Here are a few Tips to Use Less Plastic.

Yes, it would be pretty hard to eliminate plastics all together, but if everyday we are more mindful of packaging, to-go containers, straws, etc..., we slowly change our habits and make a better planet for generations to come.

Looking to brush up on your beacon skills? Did you know Rocky has its very own beacon park?! 

The beacon training park located at Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park. 
The beacon park opened last winter. It's designed for back country enthusiasts to practice simulated avalanche searches using their own avalanche beacons/transceivers and probes. The beacon training park consists of eight transmitters/targets and can be setup for single or multiple scenarios.

The beacon park is a self-serve system and is available through the winter months. Back country travelers who are familiar with avalanche rescue gear and techniques and the use of an avalanche beacon and probe are welcome to use the training park!

The South Koreans are known for dominating short track speed skating, but this comeback is beyond incredible!

The clutter of speed skating's short track relay makes it seem unfathomable that skaters can maneuver the tight track, while jostling for position and switching skaters and crazy speeds!

This race was the 3,000 meter, which is 27 laps - skaters can substitute anytime.

One of the South Koreans fell early in the race which gave the rest of the field a head start by over a half lap.

Longmont's Historic District Designation Ribbon Cutting today!

Celebrate Longmont's history and designation as a Historic District today, February 9th, at 4 PM!

The dedication ceremony will start with a ribbon cutting at the Firehouse Art Center and will be followed up with a walking tour of downtown.

The Historic Designation is a result of efforts that began in 2012. City staff and the Longmont Downtown Development Authority spearheaded the effort to gain recognition for the district. The Historically designated area is generally bound by 3rd Ave. to the south, 5th Ave. to the north, west to Coffman Street and east to Emery Street.

The district is made up of 83 buildings, 69 of which were built between 1879 and 1967.

Four of the structures have individual listings on the National Register of Historic Places including the Firehouse Art Center building, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Carnegie Library and the Dickens Opera House.

The Carnegie Library in the photo above was found on the Longmont Museum's Photo Collection site which, if you love history, you need to visit!

National Historic District designation and a National Register Listing provides formal recognition of the District’s historical, architectural, or archeological significance based on national standards.

Historic districts can help build Community Pride and provide additional tools for planning, economic development and tourism.
