MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY - JOURNEY TO THE MOUNTAIN LIFE, PART 3

by Cory Dudley

The San Juan mountains are a rugged range in southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico. Towns like Telluride, Ouray, and Silverton are nestled among these beauties. The forests, rivers, peaks, geological diversity and varied landscapes make the San Juan mountains and national forest an absolute treasure and once you're there, you really don't want to leave!

Stio, a cool little clothing company out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming put together a sweet little video series called "A San Juan Story".  Here's the final of three videos in A San Juan Story, Road to the Mountain Life by Oliver Sutro. All it took was one ski season in Telluride and a new life in the Rocky Mountain West was born!

Let it Snow! in Rocky Mountain National Park

by Cory Dudley

The west side of the park received a little snow!
1-2 inches throughout the valley. The snow will arrive, so it's time to plan some fun RMNP adventures!

What to do in the park this winter?

* Before heading out, check snow, avalanche and trail conditions.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a great activity for winter exploring. Snowshoes, warm boots and some poles and you're off! Most park trails are open to snowshoeing. An entirely different experience is had when winter adventuring in the mountains.

Cross-country Skiing
Ready to step it up and cover more ground? Cross-country skiing is also an option throughout the park. Some trails are steeper, so chat with a park ranger prior to heading out to ensure an enjoyable and safe excursion.

Sledding!
The former Hidden Valley Ski Area is your spot! It's the one place in the park where sledding is allowed. Sledding takes place on the old bunny slope area, so it's a gentle grade. Bring your own sled and walk on up. There's a warming hut and bathrooms at the base.

Ranger-Led Snowshoe or Ski Programs
Did you know RMNP has free Ranger-Led Programs? Reservations are required. Learn more here: Ranger-Led Programs

Wildlife Watching
Winter is such a beautiful time to look for wildlife, everything shows up better against a snowy backdrop. Many park roads are open and allow for a warm, easy tour by car. Look for moose on the west side, elk and mule deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes and a number of winter bird species.

Needing equipment?
Both Estes Park and Grand Lake have shops where you can rent winter equipment. The following sites give options for rental locations: Visit Estes Park | Visit Grand County

The Rocky Mountain Rangers lead Full Moon Walks in the winter months, the first one this coming Sunday. Groups leave from Beaver Meadows at 5 pm. Reservations are required and can be made in person or you can call the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center at 970-586-1223. Maybe there will even be a little fresh snow from the system that passes through Sunday - fingers crossed!

Longmont area nature lovers - have you been to Pella Crossing?

by Cory Dudley

Pella Crossing was severely damaged during the Sept. 2013 flood. In the years following, reconstruction projects included repairing the breaches between the ponds, rebuilding the trails, and restoring the trailhead. In April of 2017, Pella reopened and it is such a treasured spot for walking, jogging, fishing, bird watching or just sitting and enjoying the peace and quiet.

Pella Crossing Open Space, is located just west of Longmont on 75th, right outside of the darling town of Hygiene.

The Pella Crossing trail system navigates around 3 of the Pella ponds. You'll often see fisherman floating in the peaceful waters. Use of boats is okay as long as you are fishing.

While walking you'll enjoy incredible views of the Front Range and an abundance of wildlife - geese, cranes, beavers and more.

Doggies are allowed on leashes. Everyone is very respectful of the rules, so it's a great place for all pups to enjoy the fresh air.

The beavers are busy! There's always sign of their work and you can view their active lodges. Often you'll see them cruising through the water.

There are trails on both sides of 75th and there's a crosswalk connecting the two sides.

When you're done at Pella Crossing, you may as well head up to Hygiene for breakfast or lunch at The Crane Hollow Cafe, where you can sit with locals at the Rancher's table while enjoying a cup of coffee and a slice of homemade pie!

A walk or jog around Pella ponds is a great outing close to home. Soon Pella will connect to Golden Ponds and the St. Vrain Greenway! We're so fortunate to live in communities that value open space, health and protecting our resources.

...when you drive into this park, you forget about everything else. You hear the water, hear the birds, you hear the wind ruffling through the aspens. Everything else disappears and all you have are the sounds and your thoughts." Blake Crossland

Blake Crossland grew up in the Rocky Mountains, through which he developed a deep appreciation for exploration and adventure in the outdoors. Now, he is dedicating his life to returning the favor by becoming a trail crew leader for the Rocky Mountain Conservation Corps.

The main goal of the Conservation Corp is to get kids involved in conservation work. Younger people will determine our National Parks' futures. We need to connect young people to the public lands and parks and continue to protect these treasured places!

Thank you Blake!

Christa's HOT PICK for the week! 3119 Lake Park Way, Longmont

by Christa Marsh

My HOT PICK for the week is another one close to McIntosh Lake! With trail systems around the lake, parks, quiet streets, a close proximity to the foothills, Lyons, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, easy commuting to Boulder down Hwy 36... northwest Longmont is a beautiful and convenient location.

Patio homes are increasingly popular for their easy care along with privacy. 3119 Lake Park Way is a 3 bedroom, 3 bath - 2408 sq ft home, listed at $339,900. The Shores community features a pool & tennis courts as well. This is a gem and won't last longer than the weekend!

The main floor has an open concept with the kitchen open to the living room with cozy fireplace.

loft for project space, study or guest room.

Finished basement with egress windows could easily be turned into additional living space.

A sweet, small backyard with deck and shade trees

I've never been in a Shores patio home that I didn't like. They have comfortable and inviting floor plans and the community and surrounding neighborhoods are welcoming and have an active community.

McIntosh Lake provides views of the mountains, peaceful jogging and walking while watching the geese & eagles and the cattle graze. For those of you with family members looking to move to Longmont, this is the place! Call or email for more info!
